THE MATTRESSES: Sleep Innovations Inc. (in business since 1996) makes Sleep Innovations brand, Bodipedic, Novaform, and select Serta memory foam mattresses. Models use 2 to 3 inches of low-density (2.5 to 3.5 lbs/ft) memory foam with base foam and possibly an additional foam support layer. (See memory foam density: higher vs lower to learn about the characteristics of low-density foam.)
The ratings below are based on over 2,300 consumer reviews of various Sleep Innovations / Bodipedic / Novaform memory foam mattresses.
|Owner satisfaction||b||Sleep Innovations (Bodipedic / Novaform) mattresses have 80% owner satisfaction. ( )
|Durability / longevity||c||Owner experience data suggests that the lifespan of the beds is likely no better than fair. However, the more expensive models likely have somewhat better durability / longevity than the less expensive. Consumers should not expect more than a 6-year lifespan on average. Also, 14%+ of owners report significant sagging and / or excessive softening and loss of support occurring within 3 years. This rate is slightly higher than that of similarly priced memory foam bed brands.|
|Price / affordability||b+||Prices range from $240-$1500 depending on model and size. Like other beds in this price range, at least 20% of owners use their Sleep Innovations mattress only occasionally or temporarily.|
|Less pain / pressure||b||The beds are praised mainly for their comfort and pain/pressure-relieving ability. However, at least 15% of owners report that their mattress causes pain, usually because of excessive firmness. (See mattresses and pain relief for analysis.)|
|Firmness options||D||Different models offer somewhat different firmness (see below). However, 75% of owners report that their bed is medium to firm regardless of model. The rest say it is soft or excessively soft.|
|Back sleep friendly||b+||The beds tend to be well suited for back sleepers.|
|Side sleep friendly||c+||The tendency of the mattresses to be more firm than soft may result in less than ideal comfort for some side sleepers.|
|Stomach sleep friendly||b||The beds tend to be mostly suitable for stomach (front) sleepers.|
|Contours to body||b-||The foam used is minimally to moderately weight and temperature sensitive which often results in fairly limited contouring and molding to the body. As a result, the mattresses have a more conventional feel to them than more expensive memory foam beds such as higher-density Tempur-Pedic models.|
|Easy to move on||B-||Owners tend to say that they do not sink far into the bed. As a result, the mattress is usually easy to move on and get up off.|
|Motion isolation||b+||Motion isolation is a strength of memory foam. A person can move or get up with minimal disturbance to their partner.|
|No initial odor / off gassing||C-||There is randomness in regard to whether, how strongly and for how long Sleep Innovations beds will give off an initial smell or gas. About 11% of owners report a significant problem. (See memory foam off gassing for general analysis.)|
|No sleeping hot||b-||About 4% of consumers report that heat build up can be a problem which is better than average for a memory foam bed. Models with gel-infused memory foam likely sleep about 30% cooler longer than models with regular memory foam.|
|Good for sex||c+||Memory foam bed owner opinions are generally split on this matter. (See mattresses and sex for analysis).|
|No noise||A||The mattress is quiet when lied on or compressed.|
|Edge support||B||Less than 2% of owners complain of a lack of edge support.|
|Expands fully and evenly||c||The mattresses come vacuum sealed and compressed. About 7% of owners report that their mattress does not fully decompress which can cause uneven support, discomfort and an uneven appearance.|
|No rotating / flipping||B-||Only one side of the mattress is meant for sleeping. Nevertheless, some owners report flipping the mattress to the other side if the bed is sagging / softening or is uncomfortable.|
|Lightweight||C-||Weight is about average for a foam mattress, usually under 100 lbs. They can be difficult to move and handle especially for one person.|
|Specifications transparency||B||Openly disclosing product specifications allows consumers to know what they are paying for and helps them to comparison shop. Sleep Innovations openly discloses the thickness of the various layers of its mattresses but not always their foam density.|
|Warranty||C+||Warranty length can range from 5 to 20 years depending on the model. A significant number of owners report difficulty making a claim. (See mattress warranties: what you should know.)|
|Customer service||C+||Consumer opinions are generally split on the issue of Sleep Innovations customer service.|
|Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating||A+||Sleep Innovations, Inc. currently has an "A+" with the BBB. Its rating historically, however, has been less than stable.|
|Sleep Like The Dead (SLTD) Company Rating||B-||SLTD rating of "B-" for Sleep Innovations is based on a combination of factors including product ratings by consumers, years in business, customer service, return policy, accuracy of marketing claims, transparency of specifications, warranty, Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating and rating stability, number of BBB complaints / business size ratio.|
