Based on 2,450+ Actual Consumer Experiences
THE GOOD: Value potential • limited reports of significant heat retention • above average pain and pressure-point relief • 20-year warranty for most models.
THE BAD: Too firm for some, especially side sleepers • likely average-at-best lifespan • initial odor potential.
THE MATTRESSES: Sleep Innovations Inc. (in business since 1996) makes Sleep Innovations and Novaform brands. Models use 1.5-3" of low-density (3-3.5 lbs/ft estimated) memory foam with base foam and possibly support foam. (See memory foam density for the characteristics of low-density foam.) The mattresses come compressed and vacuum sealed.
Ratings below are based on 2,450+ consumer reviews of Sleep Innovations / Novaform memory foam mattresses gathered using an unbiased, accurate methodology.
|Owner satisfaction||b||Sleep Innovations / Novaform mattresses overall have 81% owner satisfaction. Get important details.|
|Durability / longevity||c||Owner experience data suggests that the lifespan of the beds is likely no better than fair. However, the more expensive models may have somewhat better durability / longevity than the less expensive models. Consumers should not expect more than a 6-year lifespan on average. Also, 14%+ of owners report significant sagging and / or excessive softening and loss of support occurring within 3 years – a rate slightly higher than that of similarly priced memory foam bed brands.|
|Price||b+||Prices range from $215-$900 depending on model and size. Like other beds in this price range, at least 25% of owners use their Sleep Innovations mattress only occasionally or temporarily.|
|Value||b+||Owners praise Sleep Innovations / Novaform beds for their value more than any other attribute.|
|Pressure relief / con- formable||B-||The beds moderately conform and mold to one's body, resulting in somewhat better than average distributed support and pressure-point relief. However, at least 15% of owners report excessive pressure due to high firmness.|
|Less (back) pain||b||The majority of owners report fair or better pain relief, including back pain relief. (See mattresses and pain relief for general analysis.)|
|Firmness options||D+||Most models are medium-ish, say most owners. Those seeking a highly firm or highly soft mattress may need to look elsewhere.|
|Back sleep friendly||A-||The beds tend to be well suited for back sleepers.|
|Side sleep friendly||c+||The tendency of the mattresses to be more firm than soft may result in less than ideal comfort for some side sleepers.|
|Stomach sleep friendly||b||The beds tend to be mostly suitable for stomach (front) sleepers.|
|Easy to move on||C||The beds tend to provide no more than moderate resistance to bodily movement.|
|Motion isolation||b+||Motion isolation is a strength of memory foam. A person can move or get up with minimal disturbance to their partner.|
|No initial odor / off gassing||D+||There is randomness in regard to whether, how strongly and for how long Sleep Innovations beds will give off an initial smell or gas. About 11% of owners report a significant problem. (See memory foam off gassing for general analysis.)|
|No sleeping hot||C||About 4% of consumers report significant and bothersome heat retention. This rate is better than average for a memory foam bed. Models with gel-infused memory foam likely sleep about 30% cooler longer than models with regular memory foam.|
|Good for sex||c+||Memory foam bed owner opinions are generally split on this matter. (See mattresses and sex for analysis).|
|No noise||A||The mattress is quiet when lied on or compressed.|
|Edge support||C-||About 6% of owners complain of a lack of edge support.|
|Short break-in period||D+||As is true for memory foam beds in general, break-in time is often longer than average.|
|Expands fully and evenly||c-||The mattresses come vacuum sealed and compressed. About 7% of owners report that their mattress does not fully decompress which can cause uneven support, discomfort and an uneven appearance.|
|Low mainten- ance||B||Rotating the mattress occasionally can help maintain comfort and support, say owners. The beds have a no-flip, one-sided design.|
|Easy to move, handle, lift||C-||Weight ranges from 32-140 lbs depending on model and size. The average model weighs about 88 lbs. Given their weight and lack of handles, the mattresses can be difficult to move and maneuver especially for one person.|
|Specs disclosed||B-||Openly disclosing mattress specifications allows consumers to know what they are paying for and helps them to comparison shop. Sleep Innovations openly discloses the thickness of the various layers of its mattresses but not always foam density.|
|Warranty||B||Warranty length is 5 or 20 years depending on the model. A significant number of owners report difficulty making a claim. (See mattress warranties: what you should know.)|
|Customer service||C+||Consumer opinion is generally split on the issue of Sleep Innovations customer service.|
|Return policy||B-||Amazon: Return ship fee if return is not the result of Amazon error; restock fee if after 30 days. Costco: No fee.|
|Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating||A+||Sleep Innovations, Inc. currently has an "A+" with the BBB. Its rating historically, however, has been somewhat less than stable.|
|Sleep Like The Dead (SLTD) Company Rating||C+||SLTD company rating of "C+" for Sleep Innovations is based on a combination of factors including product ratings by consumers, years in business, customer service, return policy, transparency of specifications, warranty, Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating and rating stability, number of BBB complaints / business size ratio.|
