Additional Bed Sheet Research Findings

Price. With few exceptions, sheet sets priced below $40 have considerably lower owner satisfaction than those priced above $40. Sheet sets priced between $40-$80 tend to rate highest, while sets above $80 tend to rate slightly lower. In other words, paying top dollar does not ensure higher owner satisfaction.

Thread Count. Thread count is not included in the comparison above because our findings show it to be irrelevant. Our findings show no correlation between thread count and owner satisfaction or thread count and any other factor including softness or durability.

Pilling. Pilling is the formation of small, fuzzy balls on fabric, and it is the top complaint from sheet set owners. In addition to ruining the appearance of a sheet set, pilling can make the sheets feel scratchy and less than comfortable. The sheet sets above tend to have the fewest reports of pilling.

Pocket depth. In addition to pilling, another top owner complaint is that a fitted sheet does not fit the mattress because its pocket depth is too short. Therefore, it is important to measure the thickness of your mattress (including any topper) and buy a sheet that has pocket depth equal to or greater than your mattress thickness. Our research shows that many people tend to underestimate the thickness of their mattress.

Additional Electric Blanket and Pad Research Findings

– Electric mattress pads overall have somewhat higher owner satisfaction than electric blankets. The pads, however, tend to be about 20% more expensive.

– Owner data suggests that electric mattress pads tend to outperform electric blankets in generating adequate warmth as well as alleviating pain, such as arthritis. Out of 31 people included in our research who said that they have owned both electric blankets and electric mattress pads, 22 prefer the pads.

– Reliability for both electric blankets and electric mattress pads has greatly improved in the past few years. Nevertheless, reliability / longevity are still the top owner complaint.
