THE GOOD. Sealy Optimum uses gel-infused material extensively and has more memory foam or latex than many competitors. Reports of off gassing are limited.
THE BAD. Durability / longevity and support are likely no better than fair. The mattress historically has a somewhat above average potential to trap heat.
THE MATTRESS. The Optimum consists of 3-7 inches of memory foam or latex over 7 inches of gel-infused or regular support foam. Its comfort layer includes 2 inches or more of gel- and Outlast-infused memory foam or latex.
THE COMPETITION. Optimum's main competition is Tempur-Pedic, Serta iComfort and Simmons ComforPedic and various latex-hybrid mattresses. See the memory foam mattress reviews – overview and side-by-side mattress comparison to learn how Optimum compares to similar mattresses.
Ratings below are based on 110+ Sealy Optimum owner experiences / reviews gathered using an unbiased, accurate methodology.
|Owner satisfaction||b-||The Sealy Optimum has 77% owner satisfaction. Learn more.|
|Durability / lifespan||C-||Available consumer feedback shows that at least 12% of owners report sagging, a loss of support and or the development of body impressions occurring within three years of ownership. This rate is higher than average for a memory foam mattress. All Optimum models appear to perform similar on this issue.|
|Price||c-||The Optimum is often priced $850-$3,200 depending on model and size with the average queen costing $1,830. Its price makes it mainly a mid-level as opposed to entry level or luxury mattress.|
|Value||C+||Compared to Tempur-Pedic, Optimum owners often praise the bed for its value. However, less pricey mattresses than Optimum are available that have similar or better specifications and satisfaction.|
|Conforming potential||B||Optimum moderately conforms and molds to one's body, resulting in well distributed support and pressure-point relief.|
|Less (back) pain||B-||Optimum is often effective in relieving pain, including back pain. For about 6% of owners, however, the mattress causes pain for various reasons. (See mattresses and pain relief for general analysis.)|
|Support||C+||Support may be inadequate for large people (230+ lbs) over the long term or for anyone seeking a highly supportive mattress.|
|Firmness options||b-||Most models are medium-ish to firm. Those looking for a highly soft mattress will need to look elsewhere.|
|Motion isolation||a-||Like memory foam mattresses in general, Sealy Optimum is suitable for couples because it keeps movement mostly isolated. One person can change positions, get into and out of bed without causing much if any disturbance to their partner.|
|No initial odor / off gassing||c-||Off gassing is a chemical-like odor that new mattresses sometimes release. Optimum rates average with about 9% of owners reporting a noteworthy problem. (See mattress off gassing for general analysis.)|
|Easy to move on / get up off||c||Optimum tends to give moderate resistance to changing positions and getting up off the bed. It may not, therefore, be ideally suited for the elderly or those disabled, sick, weak.|
|No heat retention||D+||Despite extensive use of gel-infused foam, 9% of owners report sleeping hot. Recently introduced "Gold" models may perform slightly to somewhat better due to the use of gel-infused support foam. (See memory foam heat retention for general analysis.)|
|Sex friendly||c||Memory foam mattress owners have mixed opinions on this issue. (See mattresses and sex for general analysis.)|
|Quiet||a||Like foam mattresses in general, Sealy Optimum makes no noise when lied on or moved on.|
|Edge support||b-||A mattress with good edge support allows a person to sit or sleep near the edge without sliding or rolling off. About 3% of Optimum owners report poor or deteriorating edge support.|
|Average- sized person friendly||A-||Optimum is best suited for people of average size, those 120-230 lbs.|
|Heavy person friendly||C+||The support / base foam may lack the thickness and or density needed to properly support a large person (240+ lbs) especially over the long term.|
|Light person friendly||c||Given the weight sensitivity of memory foam, people who weigh under 120 lbs tend to benefit the least from the foam's conforming ability especially if the mattress is firm.|
|Easy to lift, handle, move||d+||Weight is 40 to 130 lbs depending on model and size with thicker, more expensive models being heaviest. There are no handles.|
|Specs disclosed||C||Sealy tends to do a fair job of providing thickness measurements for the various layers of its mattresses, but details on the makeup of the materials is limited. Comparison shopping and making an informed buying decision therefore can be somewhat impeded.|
|Marketing accuracy||B||This rating refers to what extent Sealy's claims about Optimum reasonably reflect the experience of their average customer.|
|Warranty||C||Like other Sealy products, the warranty is 10 years total, non-prorated. (See mattress warranties: what you should know.)|
|Availability||c-||The Optimum (especially latex-hybrid models) are not as widely available as its main competition but can usually be found in most larger markets as well as online.|
|Customer service||c||Sealy customer service historically has been considered no better than fair mainly due to what consumers regard as a lack of help in regard to warranty resolution and product quality problems.|
|BBB rating||A||Sealy has an "A" rating with the Better Business Bureau. Its rating has become more stable in recent years.|
|SLTD Company Rating||C||See report.|

1 Thicker mattresses are generally for heavier people or anyone seeking a tall profile. People 240 lbs+ should likely avoid mattresses less than 10-inches thick.
2 1) Sleep Like the Dead estimates that the latex used in Optimum is blended dunlop. 2) Both the gel memory foam and the regular memory foam used are estimated to have medium (4.0 lbs/ft) density. 3) Gel foam tends to sleep cooler longer than non-gel foam. Also, Optimum's gel memory foam and latex are infused with Outlast®, a material that according to our research tends to be at least partially effective in regulating body temperature, reducing sweating, and improving thermal compatibility for couples. 4) Density for the base foam layer is estimated to be 1.8 lbs/ft.
3 Medium to firm tends to be best for back sleep; medium-soft to medium-firm for front / stomach sleep; medium to soft for side sleep. Learn more.
