THE GOOD. Sealy Optimum has above-average comfort and pressure-point relieving potential. Complaints for sleeping hot and off gassing are limited. The Optimum has more memory foam or latex content than much of the competition.
THE BAD. Its longevity is likely no better than fair. Warranty length is below that of much of the competition.
THE MATTRESS. The Sealy Optimum consists of 3-7 inches of medium-density memory foam or latex over seven inches of support foam. Its comfort layer includes 2 inches or more of gel- and Outlast®-infused memory foam or latex for the purpose of reducing heat and moisture.
THE COMPETITION. Optimum's main competition is Tempur-Pedic, Serta iComfort and Simmons ComforPedic and various latex-over-foam mattresses. See the comparison below as well as the memory foam mattress reviews – overview and side-by-side mattress comparison to learn how Optimum stacks up to other mattress brands.
The ratings below are based on 100+ Sealy Optimum owner experiences / reviews gathered using an unbiased, accurate methodology.
|Owner satisfaction||b-||The Sealy Optimum has 78% owner satisfaction. ( ).
The various Optimum models appear to rate similar to one another.
|Durability / lifespan||C||Available consumer feedback shows that at least 7% of owners report a loss of support and or the development of body impressions occurring within 1-2 years of ownership. This rate is somewhat worse than average for a memory foam or latex mattress.|
|Price / affordability||c-||The Optimum is often priced $1,500-$3,600 depending on the model and size. Its price makes it mainly a mid-level mattress as opposed to an entry level or luxury mattress.|
|Less pain / pressure points||b||Optimum is generally effective in relieving pain, including back pain. The mattress also tends to minimize pressure points especially on the hips and shoulders. For about 6% of owners, however, the mattress can cause pain for various reasons.|
|Firmness options||b||Firmness levels range from soft to firm depending on the model. (See specs below.)|
|Motion isolation||a||Like memory foam mattresses in general, the Sealy Optimum is suitable for couples because it keeps movement isolated. One person can change positions, get into and out of bed without causing much if any disturbance to their partner.|
|No initial odor / off gassing||c-||Off gassing is a chemical-like gas or odor that new mattresses sometimes release. The Optimum rates about average on this issue with about 9% of owners reporting a noteworthy problem. (See mattress off gassing for more info.)|
|Easy to move on / get up off||c||Optimum tends to give moderate resistance to changing positions and getting up off the bed. Consequently, it may not be ideally suited for the elderly and people who are disabled, sick or weak.|
|No heat retention||c||Given its use of a two-inch (or greater) gel-infused and Outlast®-infused layer(s), the Optimum rates no worse than the average mattress on the issue of heat retention or sleeping hot. (See memory foam heat retention for general analysis.)|
|Sex friendly||c||The bed scores about similar to the typical memory foam bed on this issue. (See mattresses and sex for general analysis.)|
|Quiet||a||Like foam mattresses in general, the Sealy Optimum makes no noise when lied on or moved on.|
|Lightweight||d+||Heavy weight can cause the mattress to be at least somewhat difficult to transport, move and handle. The thicker models are the heaviest.|
|Specifications transparency||C||Sealy tends to do a fair job of providing thickness measurements for the various layers of its mattresses, but details on the makeup of the materials is limited. As a result, comparison shopping and making an informed buying decision can be somewhat difficult.|
|Warranty||C||Like other Sealy products, the warranty is 10 years total, full non-prorated coverage. (See mattress warranties: what you should know.)|
|Availability||c-||The bed currently is not widely available, but can usually be found in at least a few showrooms in most larger markets.|
|Customer service||c||Sealy customer service historically has been considered no better than fair mainly due to what consumers regard as a lack of help in regard to warranty resolution and product quality problems.|
|Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating||A+||Sealy has an "A+" rating with the BBB as does its main competition, Serta and Simmons.|
|SLTD Company Rating||C+||SLTD (Sleep Like The Dead's) company rating of Sealy is a "C+." The grade is based on a combination of factors including product ratings by consumers, years in business, customer service, return policy, accuracy of marketing claims, transparency of specifications, warranty, Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating and rating stability, number of BBB complaints / business size ratio.|

1 Thicker mattresses are generally for heavier people or anyone seeking a tall profile. Persons of above-average size (220 lbs+) should likely avoid mattresses less than 10-inches thick.
2 1) Sleep Like the Dead estimates that the latex used in Optimum is blended dunlop. 2) Both the gel memory foam and the regular memory foam used are estimated to have medium (4.0 lbs/ft) density. 3) Gel foam tends to sleep cooler longer than non-gel foam. In addition, Optimum's gel memory foam and latex are infused with Outlast®, a material that according to our research tends to be at least partially effective in regulating body temperature, reducing sweating, and improving thermal compatibility for couples.
3 Medium to firm tends to be best suit for back sleepers; medium for stomach sleepers; medium to soft for side sleepers.
Tempur-Pedic is often the standard by which other memory foam mattresses are judged. The table below shows how Optimum memory foam models compare to Tempur-Pedic mattresses overall based on actual consumer experiences.
|Owner satisfaction||B-||B||Both overall have fairly similar owner satisfaction.|
|Longevity||C||B+||Tempur-Pedic likely has a 25% longer lifespan.|
|Affordability||C-||D||Avg price for Tempur-Pedic is $3,238; Optimum $2,136.|
|Less pain / pressure||B||B+||--|
|Firmness options||B||A||Tempur-Pedic has more models and firmness choices.|
|Easy to move on||C||C-||Can vary by model, but overall Optimum performs somewhat better.|
|No off gassing odor||C-||D+||Advantage somewhat to Optimum.|
|No heat retention||C||C-||Optimum has slight advantage.|
|Lightweight||D||D-||Both tend to be heavy and difficult to move / handle.|

|Availability||C||A||Tempur-Pedic is more available in stores and online.|
|Better Business Bureau rating||A+||A+||--|
|SLTD company rating||C+||B+||Tempur-Pedic brand scores better mainly because its products tend to rate better by consumers.|

– Like memory foam beds in general, the Optimum is couple friendly in that it minimizes motion transfer and disturbance.
– The Sealy Optimum is not as widely available currently in showrooms as some of its competition, namely Tempur-Pedic.
– Likely largely due to its use of at least two inches of gel-infused memory foam or latex (which tends to sleep at least slightly cooler longer than regular memory foam / latex), heat trap complaints for the Optimum are limited.
