Mattress Ratings >> Memory Foam Mattresses > Serta iComfort Mattress Bed
Based on 445 Actual Consumer Experiences

THE GOOD: The Serta iComfort has above-average owner satisfaction due mainly to pain-relief potential and limited reports of off gassing and heat retention. The mattress has a 120-day trial.
THE BAD: Durability / longevity overall is somewhat questionable. Other negatives include inconsistent firmness, heavy weight and smaller-than-stated dimensions.
THE MATTRESS: The Serta iComfort is a mid-to-luxury level memory foam mattress. All iComforts have a 6-inch foam base and two inches or more of medium-to-low density gel-infused memory foam. Some models also contain regular memory foam, regular foam and or latex.
THE COMPETITION: Tempur-Pedic, Simmons Comforpedic and Sealy Optimum are iComfort's closest competition, but several less expensive memory foam mattresses should also be considered competition. See how iComfort compares to competitors in the Memory Foam Mattress Reviews – Summary and the iComfort vs Tempur-Pedic comparison.

iComfort vs Tempur-Pedic
The ratings below are based on over 400 iComfort consumer reviews – most of which are for the Insight, Revolution, Prodigy, Genius, Wellbeing Refined, Renewal Refined and Goodnight Refined models. The Directions models (Inception, Acumen, Reinvention, Epic) are new models and, consequently, do not yet have significant owner experience data available. The data was gathered using an unbiased, accurate methodology.
| Owner satisfaction | B | Serta iComfort
has 81% owner satisfaction. (). The base iComfort models, namely Insight and Genius, rate somewhat lower than more expensive iComforts. |
| Durability / longevity | c | The iComfort is a relatively new model, and, consequently, durability / longevity is not fully clear at this time. Early consumer feedback, however, shows that at least 7% of owners report a loss of support and or the development of body impressions ("peaks and valleys") within just two years of ownership. This rate is somewhat higher than average for a memory foam mattress. All iComfort models appear to have similar durability / longevity. |
| Affordable | c- | Prices can range from $800-$4,000 depending on size and model. A foundation can cost an additional $50-$300+. The more expensive iComfort models are pricier mainly because they are thicker. See prices and specifications. |
| Less pain / pressure points | B | While there are reports of pain and discomfort (often due to excessive firmness or loss of support), the clear majority of owners report good comfort and pain relief, including back pain relief. (See mattresses and pain relief for general analysis.) |
| Firmness variety | b+ | The Serta iComfort comes in a variety of firmness levels. From softest to firmest: Wellbeing Refined, Savant, Epic, Renewal Refined, Acumen, Prodigy, Genius, Reinvention, Inception, Insight. |
| Firmness predictability | d | About 14% of iComfort owners say the bed they received has significantly different firmness than the one they tried in a showroom. See the firmness predictability comparison for details. |
| Motion isolation | A | Motion isolation tends to be a strength for memory foam mattresses in general. A bed with good motion isolation is couple friendly in that it isolates movement made by one person so the other person is not disturbed. |
| Easy to move on | c | Firmer models are fairly easy to move on, but the other models with their increased softness and or higher density foam offer more resistance to movement, including tossing and turning. |
| No initial odor / off gassing | b- | "Off gassing" is the release of a chemical-like odor that can occur when a mattress is new. About 6% of iComfort owners complain of a moderate-to-strong initial odor. See the off gassing comparison below and memory foam off gassing for more analysis. |
| No sleeping hot | c+ | About 5% of consumers report that the iComfort acts as a heat trap. No one particular iComfort model tends to sleep hotter or cooler than the others. For more analysis see the sleeping hot comparison below and memory foam heat retention. |
| Sex friendly | C | Owners tend to be split on this issue. (See mattresses and sex for general analysis). |
| No noise | A | The mattress itself is silent under all conditions, but the foundation may in some instances make noise. |
| No rotating / flipping | B- | The iComfort, like most memory foam beds, is a one-sided design which should not be flipped. Serta suggests rotating the mattress (head to foot) every few months for year one and then twice annually after that. |
| Lightweight | D | Heavy weight is a complaint for memory foam mattresses in general. The average weight of a queen iComfort is about 95 lbs. The thicker, higher density and more expensive iComfort models are especially heavy and difficult to move, transport and maneuver. |
| Warranty | a | The warranty is 25 years with the first 15 years non-prorated. This coverage is superior to what most mattresses provide, memory foam or other. Compression / sagging coverage begins at greater than .75 inches which is good. (See mattress warranties: what you should know.) |
| Return policy | b+ | The bed has a 120-day trial. You must keep the bed for at least 30 days. (See returning a mattress: what you should know.) |
| Availability | b+ | The iComfort tends to be widely available at both physical and online retailers. |
| Customer Service | c | Serta's customer service is considered no better than average. |
| Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating | a+ | Serta currently is accredited with the BBB (unlike Sealy and Simmons) and has an "A+" rating. Its rating, however, in the past has fluctuated significantly. |

The three top (although not widespread) complaints for memory foam mattresses in general are off gassing, sleeping hot, and unpredictable firmness. The comparisons below show how Serta iComfort performs on these issues compared to all mattresses overall and memory foam mattresses in particular.
Off gassing is a chemical-like odor that a mattress may release when new. While the Serta iComfort off gasses slightly more often than the average mattress, it off gasses considerably less often than the average memory foam mattress. It should also be noted that the more expensive, thicker iComfort models may be somewhat more likely to off gas than the less expensive, thinner models.
A mattress that "sleeps hot" acts as a heat trap and can cause sleeping on the mattress to be unpleasant. While the Serta iComfort sleeps hot about as often as the average mattress, it sleeps hot less often than the average memory foam mattress.
Why the iComfort performs better than the average memory foam mattress on this issue is likely due to its layer of gel-infused memory foam which, according to Serta, is designed to limit heat buildup.
Memory foam mattresses overall have more unpredictability in their firmness than do other mattress types. This means that among memory foam mattresses of the same model and specifications, each mattress may have its own unique firmness level to some degree.
For whatever reason, the Serta iComfort appears to have more firmness unpredictability than the average memory foam mattress. About 14% of iComfort owners report that the mattress they received has significantly different firmness (usually firmer as opposed to softer) than the one they tried in a showroom. Most owners reporting this issue say they get used to the firmness eventually, while some do not and, as a result, return the mattress.
Tempur-Pedic is often the standard by which other memory foam mattresses are judged. The table below shows how Serta iComfort models overall compare to Tempur-Pedic mattresses overall based on actual owner experiences.
