Glossary
The Brookstone offers eight natural and synthesized sound programs, including white noise.
Sounds play continuously or with a 30, 60 or 90-minute auto shut-off. When the sound goes off, it does so gently over time.
Sound quality is mediocre and lacks authenticity. While the volume level is generally effective, it does not get loud enough to adequately mask loud unwanted noises. In addition, if the machine's volume is put to a high setting, it can have a tendency to rattle.
The sounds that the Brookstone plays are digital recordings lasting several seconds which play over and over. Fortunately, the recordings seem virtually loopless, meaning that you generally can't notice when the recordings start over again.
In addition to playing sounds, the product provides a full-function alarm clock with dual alarm settings and a built-in calendar. For those who need a loud alarm, this product may be inadequate because the alarm volume cannot be adjusted.
The Brookstone's suitability for travel is mixed. While it is indeed small, lightweight and has useful features for the traveler such as duel time, the power adapter does not use variable voltage. This means that you have to buy a separate power adapter if you travel to countries with 220 voltage. On the plus side, it can run on batteries (four AA).
The reliability and longevity of the product are questionable because of various malfunctions, especially regarding the display.
Another noteworthy problem for many owners is that the clock display and / or selection light for the sounds is too bright -- bright enough to interfere with sleep.
