Probably the most simple, inexpensive and easy way to ensure
that you have darkness when you are trying to sleep is to use
a sleep mask (also known as an eye mask, sleeping mask, and
sleep eye mask).
Sleep
masks are made of light-blocking material that cover your
eyes and fasten around your head. They are capable of blocking
nearly 100% of light. Most people find them to be effective
and easy to get used to wearing. However, if your initial
impression is that you don't like wearing one, don't give
up too fast. Try wearing the mask a few nights to get used
to it and to find the right adjustment of the strap.
Advantages of a Sleep Mask:
A sleep
mask provides a quick, easy way to block light from reaching
your eyes.
It
is inexpensive compared to other ways of blocking light,
such as window treatment.
You
can take it anywhere you may want to get sleep and block
light.
Disadvantages
of a Sleep Mask:
While
generally comfortable, it can take getting used to, and
some people for whatever reason cannot get used to wearing
one.
Like
anything you wear on a regular basis, it will need washing
and can wear out.
It
can be misplaced.
While
it effectively blocks light from reaching your eyes, it
does not stop light from hitting your skin as light-blocking
window treatment can do. Light hitting your skin during
the night from a street lamp shining through the window,
for example, may cause your body to think it is morning
and want to start the day. (However, if you have light in
your bedroom at night, your blankets may do an effective
job of blocking most light from reaching your skin.)
