Sleep Number Bed Warranty & Return Policy Ratings

Owners generally give the Sleep Number Bed no better than fair ratings for its warranty which is a 20-year limited.

It gets only fair ratings mainly because prorated coverage begins after just the second year of ownership.

Other airbed brands often provide at least a slightly longer non-prorated period than the Sleep Number Bed.

And the brands of most other mattress types, such as innerspring and memory foam, provide non-prorated coverage for at least half of their warranty's period which is often about 10 years.

For more information, see mattress warranties: what you should know.

Warranty Terms of Sleep Number Bed

0-2 years after purchase No cost to owner for repair
2-20 years after purchase Owner pays 20% of repair costs plus 4% of repair cost for each year from original purchase date

For the 2-20 year portion of the warranty, here is an example. You have a problem that costs $200 to repair and you've had the Sleep Number Bed for 10 years. You will pay 20% of the cost ($200 x 20% = $40) plus 4% of the cost times 10 years (4% x $200 x 10 = $80). So you will owe $120 ($40+$80) of the $200 repair cost and Sleep Number will pay the rest.

Return policy

Sleep Number's return policy gets fair-to-poor ratings overall from owners.

It consists of a 45-day trial period in which if you do not like the product you can send it back for an exchange or refund.

Owners like this trial period aspect but do not like that they must pay return and original shipping if they send it back; this can mean several hundred dollars. Competitor air bed brands usually have less costly return policies. For more information, see: returning a mattress: what you should know.

Better Business Bureau Rating

Sleep Number / Select Comfort currently has an "A+" rating from the BBB. The company's rating tends to fluctuate fairly often, but usually does not fall below a "B."

Love Making Suitability

About half of the owners included in our research who commented on the issue said that their Sleep Number Bed is suitable for sex, or at least no less suitable than other bed types. The other half of owners said that sex is not good on the beds because they say the beds have a trench or intrusion in the middle where the two air chambers meet.

This, they say, makes it difficult and uncomfortable to be in the middle of the bed, and this causes them to have sex on one side or the other which does not leave enough room. However, the trench / intrusion in the middle can be minimized by having each side of the bed set with the same firmness level.

Other owners, while not directly mentioning sex, said that the trench / intrusion in the middle does not allow them to spoon or cuddle with their partner comfortably.

For more information see mattress and sex comparison.

Sleeping Positions

Owner data tends to show that the Sleep Number Bed is somewhat best suited for back sleepers; they tend to have fewer complaints regarding comfort. It should be pointed out that this is generally true for all mattresses.

The clear majority of both male and female owners approve of their Sleep Number bed. Women, however, are somewhat more likely than men to find the mattress too firm and heat trapping.

Sleep Number Bed Model Ratings

The clear majority of owners included in our research did not report or were unaware of which Sleep Number Bed model they own, such as the Classic (c2,c3,c4, cSE), Performance (p5, p6, p7) or Innovation series (i8, i10, iLE). As a result, statistically significant ratings for the the various individual models are not available.

Based on the limited owner experience data that is available, however, the various models all rate about the same. They also all tend to have many of the same complaints and positives.

Higher priced models, owner data suggests, are softer and somewhat more comfortable because they have more padding, such as a pillow top. The data shows, however, that higher priced models may have more costly repairs if something goes wrong.

Based on a few owner experiences, the Sleep Number FlexFit adjustable bed gets positive ratings. The adjustable base is made by Leggett and Platt. See adjustable bed base reviews for more information.
