Advantages of Memory Foam Mattresses -- Based on Data From Over 3,400 Actual Owners
Page last updated Feb 5, 2010
1. Less pain / more comfortable
At least 15% of owners in our research indicate that their memory foam mattresses, especially those with higher density, relieve pain -- especially back, hip and shoulder pain.
This pain
relief may be due to the weight
and temperature sensitivity of memory foam. Owners say
that they have less pain when lying on the bed because of adequate
support and a lack of significant pressure points.
Many owners
also report less pain when out of bed. For example, owners with back pain often say that they experience
less pain during the day since they began sleeping on their
memory foam bed.
2. Little or no motion transfer
Motion transfer has to do with how the mattress localizes or
absorbs motion. In other words, a bed that has little or no
motion transfer absorbs the movement of one person on the bed
so that the other person does not feel it.
The data shows that
memory foam beds have the least amount of motion transfer compared
to other types of beds, with the exception of latex mattresses. About 13% memory foam bed owners in
our research mentioned that the bed localizes or absorbs motion.
Almost no memory foam mattress owner included in our research complained
about motion transfer.
3. Durability / longevity
When compared mainly to innerspring mattresses,
memory foam beds, even many of the least expensive brands, often perform well. In fact, our research indicates that memory foam beds as a group on average have at least 50% more durability / longevity than do innerspring beds as a group on average.
4. Value
Memory foam bed owners say that they appreciate how far their
dollar goes with their purchase. Even owners of the pricey Tempurpedic®
mattress often say that buying one was money well spent. In
fact, it's not uncommon for owners to say that buying a memory
foam bed was one of the best purchases they have ever made.
This satisfaction is fueled by the fact that people as a group
find the beds to be comfortable, pain relieving and reasonably
durable and long lasting. In addition, the fact that prices
for quality memory foam mattresses have fallen and often have
a similar if not better price than other mattress types also
helps owners to regard their bed as a value.
5. Dust mite resistant?
Some owners included in our data report less allergies since
they began sleeping on their memory foam mattress. These owners
often believe that this is due to memory foam being dust mite
resistant. It is unclear whether their lessened allergies are
due to their memory foam bed. Read more about dust mites and memory foam.
