Pain Relief Ratings
Owners often report good initial pain relief from their Simmons Beautyrest mattress, including a minimization of pressure points.
However, the prevention and reduction of pain – such as back, hip and shoulder pain– is generally not a long-term strength of the bed. This is mainly because of premature sagging which includes the development of body impressions or cavities.
At least 16 percent of owners report that sagging is a cause of pain, especially back pain.
An additional 10 percent say pain is caused by too much firmness or too much softness.
Sources of Pain As Reported by Simmons Beautyrest Owners
Compared to other innerspring beds, the Simmons Beautyrest rates about average in regard to pain relief. It rates below average, however, compared to the mattress types of memory foam, latex, air and water. (See mattresses and pain relief for more analysis.)
Motion Isolation
The Beautyrest's pocketed coils are usually effective in isolating movement made by one person so that another person on the bed does not notice the movement much if at all. In other words, the Beautyrest is couple friendly in this regard. Owner experience data shows that motion isolation is an advantage that the Beautyrest tends to have over much of its innerspring bed competition, namely Sealy and Serta.
Initial Odor / Off Gassing
The Simmons Beautyrest tends to not have a significant problem with off gassing. Off gassing is the giving off of a chemical-like odor when the mattress is new. Only about 3% of owners report a problem.
Sleeping Hot
Beautyrests with a thick pillow top tend to have more sleeping hot or heat trap complaints than non-pillow top models. But even the pillow top models have no more than 6% of owners reporting a heat problem.
Love Making Suitability
Innerspring mattresses in general, including the Simmons Beautyrest, tend to get somewhat above-average ratings on this issue.
Complaints regarding love-making suitability for the Beautyrest often are due to mattress sagging which can undermine comfort and the usability of the bed.
(See the mattresses and sex comparison for a general analysis.)
Noise
As is the case with most innerspring beds, the innersprings inside the Simmons can at least occasionally creak, groan, pop or clunk (but not squeak) especially as the mattress ages, say about 4% of owners. By contrast, several other mattress types, such as memory foam and latex, make no noise.
Dust Mites
All mattress types can have dust mites (which can trigger allergies in some people), but innerspring mattresses, such as the Beautyrest, likely attract more dust mites than the average mattress. (See mattresses and dust mites for general analysis.)
Weight
Thicker Simmons Beautyrest models can weigh considerably more than thinner models. A heavy weight can make changing linens as well as transporting, rotating or moving the bed difficult.
Warranty
The warranty is for 10 years (non-prorated) for all models except the Beautyrest Black which has a 20-yr limited. The warranty of Simmons is essentially the same as those of Sealy and Serta.
At least 15% of Beautyrest owners complain that the warranty is lacking in regard to coverage for sagging. This is generally a complaint for all innerspring mattresses. More info: Mattress Warranties: What You Should Know.
