Pain Issues
The ability to reduce discomfort and pain, including back, hip and shoulder pain, is generally not a distinct strength or weakness of the Sealy Posturepedic.
When the mattress is new, owners often report having good comfort and reduced pain, including a minimization of pressure points.
But as the mattress ages and sags, at least 15% of Posturepedic owners report increased pain, especially back pain, caused mainly by an uneven sleep surface.
Excessive firmness and excessive softness are other main causes of reported pain and discomfort from Posturepedic owners.
Cause of Pain As Reported by Sealy Posturepedic Owners
Compared to innerspring mattresses in general, the Posturepedic is competitive in regard to pain relief, but it falls somewhat short when compared to mattresses in general, especially memory foam, latex and air beds. (See mattresses and pain relief for general analysis.)
Firmness Variety
Like most innerspring mattresses, the Posturepedic is often available in a wide range of firmnesses to suit nearly any preference. Owners, however, by a 2-1 ratio report that their bed is more soft than firm.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation refers to how well the mattress keeps movement by one person from being felt by another. Many low- and mid-priced Posturepedic models tend to not perform well on this issue, but more expensive models can perform better, especially those with memory foam or memory foam / latex.
Initial Odor / Off Gassing
Posturepedics without memory foam tend to have few reports of off gassing / initial odor. At least 10% of owners of Posturepedic models with memory foam, however, report significant off gassing / initial odor.
Off gassing / initial odor can make the bed unpleasant to sleep on until the problem subsides, and for a small number of owners, it can cause headaches, nausea and breathing irritation.
Sleeping Hot
Heat trap complaints by owners are almost exclusive to Sealy Posturepedics with memory foam and or a substantial pillow top. About 10% of these owners report heat buildup to an extent that makes the mattress uncomfortable.
Love Making Suitability
Generally, the Posturepedic gets somewhat above-average ratings on this issue.
Complaints regarding love-making suitability usually stem from the Posturepedic sagging which can undermine the comfort and usability of the mattress.
Some Posturepedic models with substantial memory foam receive complaints because they can be difficult to easily move on.
(See mattresses and sex comparison for general analysis.)
Noise
Noise coming from the Posturepedic when sat or lied upon is reported by at least 10% of owners making it a significant complaint. The noise is usually described by owners as a squeaking, creaking or crunching sound that seemingly comes from the innersprings.
Dust Mite Resistant
All mattress types can have dust mites (which can trigger allergies in some people), but innerspring beds, including the Posturepedic, likely attract more dust mites than the average mattress. (See mattresses and dust mites for analysis.)
Weight
Thicker, more expensive Sealy Posturepedic models and those with a layer of memory foam and or latex tend to be heaviest. A heavy weight can make changing linens as well as transporting or moving the bed difficult.
Warranty
Sealy Posturepedics usually come with a full non-prorated 10-year warranty. Some of the cheaper models can have a shorter warranty length. The Posturepedic's warranty is similar to most other innerspring mattresses, but it is shorter than the warranty of many memory foam, latex and air bed brands.
The staining and soiling of a Posturepedic can void its warranty. Using a mattress protector from the first night forward will help to avoid this fairly common problem. More info: Mattress Warranties: What You Should Know.
