What You Need To Know

What Is It?: Sealy brand mattresses (not including Posturepedic and Embody) are entry-level beds with an innerspring or foam core.

They are often used on a temporary / occasional basis. As a result, they tend to be fairly well suited for a college student, spare bedroom or young child. However, up to 60% of owners use the Sealy regularly as their permanent bed.

Owner Satisfaction: Sealy brand mattresses have 75% customer satisfaction.

Price Range: $250-$700 depending on model.

Pros: Low price; reasonably comfortable; relatively lightweight.

Cons: Moderate to short lifespan (with regular, long-term use); noise (squeaking / creaking), too firm for some people.

Main Competition: Futons, temporary-use airbeds as well as low-priced memory foam mattresses. See the mattress price comparison for more on how Sealy compares to other low-priced beds.

Other Sealy Mattresses: Sealy Posturepedic (innerspring); Comfort Series (memory foam); Embody (memory foam and latex); and luxury brand Stearns & Foster (innerspring).

sealy comparison chart
Durability / longevity c- Owners who use the Sealy for non-regular, occasional or temporary use tend to report fair durability / longevity. Owners, however, who use the bed as their primary and permanent bed usually report a four-year or less life span.
Price b+ The price range is $250-$700 which makes the Sealy a value-priced mattress.
Comfort / less pain c+ Neither a clear strength nor weakness. (See mattresses and pain relief for general analysis.)
Easy to move on B+ There are few if any complaints that the bed is difficult to toss and turn on.
Firmness variety C+ One reason that the Sealy mattresses are low priced is because they often have minimal padding. Most models have firm to medium firmness.
Motion isolation d+ The Sealy brand beds (innerspring) are usually not couple friendly in that movement made from one person on the bed can often be felt by and disturb another person on the bed. Foam models, however, perform better on this issue.
No initial odor / off gassing B- Initial odor / off gassing is not a significant complaint by owners.
No sleeping hot B Sleeping hot is not a significant complaint by owners.
Good for sex B- Refer to mattresses and sex for analysis.
No noise D At least 15% of owners complain that their Sealy (innerspring) mattress makes noise, namely squeaking and creaking, when sat or lied upon.
Dust mite resistant D Sealy brand mattresses can over time become home to large dust mite populations. See mattresses and dust mites for analysis.
No rotating / flipping needed B The Sealy is "no flip." The mattress may need to be rotated on occasion to combat wear.
Lightweight b- While not as light as some other temporary-use beds, such as airbeds, the bed is often light enough to not be overly difficult to transport, move and maneuver.
Warranty c The warranty can range from 1-10 years. Most Sealy brand beds, however, have a 5-year non-prorated warranty. This is comparable to most other mattresses in this price range. See mattress warranties: what you should know.
Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings A+ Sealy has an "A+" rating with the BBB. It has had 232 complaints in the past three years. Most of these complaints appear to be in relation to problems with Sealy innerspring mattresses.
