Saatva Mattress Ratings

The ratings – based on 280+ consumer reviews gathered using an unbiased, accurate methodology – show how Saatva mattress rates in comparison to the average mattress.

Owner satisfaction B The Saatva mattress has 81% owner satisfaction. Get details.
Affordable B Saatva is priced $600-$1400 depending on size, not including a foundation. More.
Durability / longevity C Available data suggests no better than fair durability / longevity. Innerspring beds (especially pillow tops) are often not strong performers in this area. More.
General support B Reports for inadequate support are few, but some large people / couples may find it lacking especially over the long term.
Less (back) pain C+ See mattresses and pain relief for general analysis.
Minimizes pressure B- Better conforming and pressure-relieving mattresses are available, namely those with more (memory) foam content.
Easy to move on B Saatva mattresses tend to provide little resistance to movement and the changing of positions.
Easy to get on and off C- Saatva has above-average height / thickness (11.5" and 14.5"). While this can give the mattress an upscale presence, at least 15% of owners say height makes entry / exit somewhat challenging. More.
Motion isolation C Motion isolation – a bed's ability to absorb a person's movement so as to not disturb another person – is questionable. More.
Edge support B- Sitting or sleeping near the edge of the mattress is adequate for most owners.
No initial odor B- About 7% of owners (1 in 14) report significant unpleasant initial odor. (General analysis: mattress off gassing.)
No sleeping hot B- About 5% of owners (1 in 20) report bothersome heat retention. More.
Good for sex B Saatva has bounce which is a plus for most people, but the firmer models may be too firm for some positions. (See mattresses and sex for general analysis).
No noise B- About 6% of owners (1 in 17) report significant noise coming from the springs. This is similar to the rate of innerspring mattresses overall.
No topper needed C About 9% of owners (1 in 11) need to add a topper to the mattress to improve softness and comfort. Learn more.
Fast break in C Break in appears to be about two weeks on average. Side sleepers tend to report the longest break-in time.
Easy to lift, handle, move D+ A queen-sized Saatva weighs about 115 pounds. The 14.5" model comes with handles, but they are for rotation only – not to carry the mattress. Learn more about Saatva's weight.
Easy to maintain C- Saatva is one sided / no flip. Rotation (head to foot) at least once a year may be needed to prevent and minimize sagging / wear. Given the weight of the mattress, doing so may require more than one person.

Marketing Accuracy

The Good

Saatva clearly states that their mattresses are not suited for everyone due to highly soft and highly firm models not being available. This is in contrast to some mattress companies who say that their mattress provides universal comfort even if they offer only one model / firmness.

The Bad

Saatva claims a 9.7 / 10 rating for their mattress (brand) based on over 15,000 reviews – which according to Saatva makes it the best reviewed mattress (brand).

Saatva claims that 15,000+ people have reviewed their mattress (brand). Sleep Like The Dead finds that only about 35% of these people wrote their review when they were in actual possession of their Saatva mattress and had slept on it for more than three nights. The rest of the people had not yet taken possession of the mattress at the time of writing their review; their review was solicited around the time of purchase and is an evaluation of the online ordering / delivery process only.

An argument could be made that the ordering / delivery process is a part of the brand experience, and that reviews of this process can be legitimately included in reviews of Saatva. Nevertheless, disclosure from Saatva on the nature of these reviews is likely warranted as consumers may wrongly assume that all or most of the reviews evaluate primarily the mattress itself.

From the 15,000+ reviews, Saatva claims a 9.7 / 10 evaluation for their mattress. Sleep Like The Dead’s examination of the reviews finds the rating to be closer to 9.4 / 10. A greater discrepancy is apparent, however, when only the reviews of people who have taken possession of their mattress and have slept on it for more than three nights are considered. For these people overall, the evaluation is 8.4 / 10.

The Questionable

The meaning of Saatva's claim that it is the "best reviewed mattress" is unclear. If it means that in relation to other mattress brands, Saatva has the greatest volume of reviews on the web and also the highest ratio of positive reviews to negative reviews, then Sleep Like The Dead cannot comment on the claim's accuracy. We do not evaluate mattresses by this measure because the results can be too easily manipulated.

Also, Saatva claims that its mattress will last 10-15 years. Given that the average innerspring mattress lasts about six years with normal use, Saatva's claim is probably too optimistic.

Finally, Saatva claims that its mattress is "ultra premium." In the opinion of Sleep Like The Dead, the coil-on-coil spring system and organic cover are perhaps premium aspects. No other aspects of the mattress, however, seem to live up to such a strong claim.

Key Comparisons

Owner Satisfaction

The Saatva mattress has 81% owner satisfaction. This rate is significantly higher than that of the average innerspring mattress (64%).

The higher-than-average satisfaction rate for Saatva is due mostly to Saatva's customer service. Owner experiences show that the company – unlike most innerspring mattress manufacturers / retailers – has a history of doing just about anything to satisfy the customer. This may include, for example, sending a free topper to the customer to improve comfort during break-in and or exchanging / replacing the mattress promptly without feet dragging.

Price / Value

The price of the Saatva mattress is lower than that of the average mattress and similar to that of the average innerspring mattress (not including innerspring hybrids). Saatva compares favorably price-wise against mattresses with generally similar specs – especially offerings from Serta, Sealy, and Simmons.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation – a bed's ability to absorb a person's movement so as to not disturb another person – is neither a clear strength nor clear weakness of the bed. Consumers coming from a memory foam bed or pocket coil bed are most likely to be disappointed. (General analysis: mattress motion isolation.)

Topper Usage

About 9% of Saatva mattress owners need to add a topper to soften the mattress and create acceptable comfort.

Heat Retention

The Plush Soft model is probably most likely to sleep hot among the three models due to the fact that a person will sleep somewhat deeper into the mattress. (General analysis: mattresses and sleeping hot.)

About .3 inch of memory foam in lumbar section Memory foam has conforming ability for comfort and pressure point relief. Not enough of the material may be present to make significant difference.
4 inch pocket coils Contours to the body for comfort and support. Some people, mainly those that are heavy, may feel coils as material above coils ages / compresses.

Base Layer

  Main Pros Main Cons
Bonnell coils – 7" tall on 14.5" model and 4" tall on 11.5" model Perhaps offers somewhat better support and durability than other coil types. Questionable motion isolation. Some noise possible.

Total Thickness

A Saatva mattress comes in a thickness of 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. And adding a topper will make the bed even taller.

saatva mattress thickness compare

Main Pros Main Cons
Saatva's above-average thickness gives it an upscale presence. People of average or greater height will find the mattress mostly easy to get on and off. Shorter people (especially those under 5' 5") may find mattress to be a challenge to get on and off; a low profile foundation can help lower the bed's overall height.

A Saatva queen-sized mattress weighs about 110 pounds in the 11.5 inch height and 120 pounds in the 14.5 inch height. Both weights are above average.

saatva weight compare

Main Pros Main Cons
Given its weight, the Saatva mattress feels substantial and will mostly stay in place on its base needing little if any adjustment and maintenance in this regard. Given its weight, the mattress can be difficult to lift, move, maneuver – especially for one person.
