unbiased Boyd Airbed Review, Ratings & Comparisons [why trust]

Based on 52 Consumer Experiences

July 31, 2017

What You Need To Know

THE GOOD: Six air chambers (on select models) provide adjustability in multiple areas of mattress • 100 possible adjustment settings • limited reports of uneven sleep surface • potential for sleeping hot often no worse than average • in business since 1977.

THE BAD: Potential for air leaks, mechanical / electronic problems and comfort layer deterioration / sagging • 2-year full coverage warranty • limited availability in stores.

THE BEDS: Boyd airbeds use air chambers for main support. An electric air pump controlled by wired LED hand controls adjusts firmness by adding or removing air from the mattress. The comfort layer can consist of regular foam, gel-infused memory foam, and latex. The beds are made by Boyd Specialty Sleep.

THE RETAILER: Finding Boyd airbeds in mattress showrooms can be difficult. They are available online especially at Boyd's airbed retailer, Nightairbeds.com. (See buying a mattress online: what to know.)

THE COMPETITION: Sleep Number and several lesser-known airbed brands. See the airbed reviews – summary and the mattress comparison for more information.

Boyd Airbed Ratings

The ratings below – based on consumer reviews gathered using an unbiased, accurate methodology – show how Boyd airbeds rate in comparison to the average mattress.

Owner satisfaction b Boyd airbeds overall have 81% owner satisfaction. More.
Affordable C- $900-$3000 (not including foundation) depending on model and size. More.
Durable / reliable c- Like airbeds in general, a significant number of owners report at least one problem over the life of the bed, usually related to hose connections, pumps or controllers.
Longevity / lifespan b+ Any durability problem can be repaired by the bed's owner with replacement parts sent from Boyd. (Replacement parts may be at least partially covered under warranty.) This ability to repair the beds tends to give them a better lifespan than conventional mattresses.
Adjustable firmness A- The mattress can be made more firm or less firm by adding or removing air through the use of an electric pump. Up to 100 unique settings are possible. Six-chamber models allow for greater adjustment than two-chamber models.
Minimizes pressure points B Pressure relief can vary by model as the least expensive may lack adequate comfort layer cushion for some side sleepers. In general, however, the beds moderately conform and adapt to one's body, resulting in above average distributed support and pressure-point relief.
Less (back) pain B+ 22%+ of Boyd owners say the bed relieves pain, including back pain, due mainly they say to the bed's adjustability. (See mattresses and pain relief for general analysis.)
No "middle problem" B+ Some airbeds, namely Sleep Number, may have an uneven or obstructed sleep surface due mainly to the presence of an intrusion in the middle where the air chambers meet. Boyd airbeds, however, have few reports of this problem.
No noise C- Like airbeds in general, the air pumps can make some noise when in use – loud enough to disturb one's partner in some cases.
Ease of (initial) use D Initial experimentation is often needed to find a suitable firmness setting – especially for the six-chamber models. And changing positions for some owners requires adjusting the firmness.
Ready to use d+ Like airbeds in general, Boyd beds require assembly taking about 20-60 minutes.
Easy to move on / get up off B+ The beds are generally easy to move on especially when set at a firm adjustment level. Models taller than 12 inches may make getting on and off somewhat difficult for shorter people.
Motion isolation B The beds tend to perform somewhat better than the average mattress in isolating movement made by one person so that another person on the bed is not disturbed.
No initial odor / off gassing C The beds may give off an odor when new. About 8% of owners report that it is strong and enduring.
No sleeping hot C+ Less than 10% of owners report bothersome heat retention. Softer models (those with thicker comfort layers) are more likely to retain heat than firmer, thinner models.
Good for sex B- Softer models tend to perform best on this issue.
No topper needed B- The less expensive models often are thinner / firmer and therefore may require the purchase of a topper to improve comfort. Overall, Boyd performs better than Sleep Number on this issue.
Easy to lift, handle, move B- The ability to break the beds down into their individual components make them relatively easy to move / transport.

Boyd Specialty Sleep Company Ratings

The ratings below – based on consumer experiences and the evaluation of Sleep Like The Dead – show how Boyd Specialty Sleep compares to the average mattress manufacturer.

Warranty d+ All Boyd airbeds have a 20-year warranty, but (like most airbeds) non-prorated coverage typically ends after just two years. This means that for most of the warranty period, you pay at least 50% of the cost to repair the bed. (See mattress warranties: what you should know.)
Return policy B- Policy varies by retailer. Boyd's online airbed retailer, Nightairbeds.com, offers a 100-day trial period and will pay return shipping; the bed must be kept at least 30 days. From this retailer, a limited number of customers report experiencing an extended amount of time and difficulty in getting their money back. (See returning a mattress: what to know.)
Customer service B- Overall, customer service appears to be regarded by consumers as somewhat above average.
Delivery C- There appears to be an above average number of complaints regarding lengthy or delayed delivery.
Marketing accuracy B+ Boyd claims their airbeds have no motion transfer, but about 15% of owners disagree. Aside from this claim, Boyd is essentially accurate and factual in its marketing.
Specs disclosed B The disclosing of specifications allows consumers to know what they are paying for and helps them to comparison shop.
Time in business A Boyd has been in business and under the same ownership since 1977.
BBB rating A+ The Better Business Bureau rating for Boyd Specialty Sleep / Nightairbeds.com is "A+." Eight BBB complaints have been filed against Boyd in the past three years, a number which is about average for a mattress manufacturer / retailer of its size.
SLTD rating of company B- SLTD (Sleep Like The Dead) company rating of "B-" for Boyd Specialty Sleep is determined by averaging the above company ratings.

* Partial estimate.
** Partial estimate. While firmness / comfort can be adjusted by adding or removing air, the general firmness of the bed is mostly determined by the thickness and composition of the comfort layer which varies by model. A model with a thicker comfort layer tends to be softer at any setting, while a model with a thinner comfort layer tends to be firmer at any setting.
*** Queen and king models.
