Mattresses:
Consumer Reports vs. Sleep Like The Dead
Consumer
Reports does not rate mattress brands or even different
mattress types. Of course, Sleep Like The Dead does. Let's look
at the reasons for this.
Mattress Models and
Brands
The Consumer Reports folks say that model names from the top
mattress brands differ from store to store. As a result, they
say it is impossible to compare models. In addition, they say
that even for mattresses that are similar, there are differences
in important characteristics that can affect comfort, such as
quilting, padding, springs, etc.
This is all true. And Sleep Like The Dead does not attempt to
rate specific models either. However, we do provide ratings
on a brand overall by collecting owner opinions on all
or at least some of the brand's models, differentiating only
by type of mattress (innerspring, memory foam, water, air.)
For example, there are different models of Sealy Posturepedic
that use innerspring coils, but we pool all owner comments on
Posturepedic innerspring into one total regardless of model
or variation.
This approach provides a valuable overview of comfort satisfaction
on a brand level -- as opposed to providing no comfort satisfaction
information at all.
Personal Preference
Another reason the folks at Consumer Reports give for not rating
mattresses is that no one mattress is right for everyone.
Again, this is true. However, as Sleep Like The Dead has determined
with its research, people as a group seemingly find some
brands or types of mattresses to be more comfortable than others.
For good reason, most mattress shoppers would want to know if,
say, 80% of actual owners find a particular mattress brand comfortable
or if only 40% do.
This does not mean that a mattress brand with high satisfaction
will be right for everyone, but it is a potentially important
piece of information to have and consider when mattress shopping.
At the very least, this information will give a person a place
to start shopping.
