Adjustable Firmness

"Adjustable firmness" means that the bed allows for its firmness to be made harder or softer.

Airbeds
Both the Sleep Number / Select Comfort and Comfortaire beds provide adjustable firmness at the touch of a button. They also offer separate air chambers which can allow each side of the bed to have its own firmness setting independent of the other.

Memory foam beds
These mattresses do not offer adjustable firmness. However, one can purchase a topper for the mattress that can change the bed's firmness to harder or softer.

Waterbeds
Waterbeds can be adjusted in regard to firmness by adding or removing water. This, of course, takes some work to do and is not nearly as simple and easy as adjusting firmness on an air bed.

Latex beds
These mattresses do not offer adjustable firmness in the same convenient way that airbeds do. However, they can be custom made to suit your firmness preference.

Innerspring / coil mattresses
Innerspring beds cannot be adjusted for firmness. However, one can purchase a topper for the mattress that can change the bed's firmness to harder or softer.
