Adjustable Mattress Firmness
"Adjustable firmness" in our research means that the mattress allows for its firmness to be made softer or firmer to suit the preference of the user. Airbeds and waterbeds are the only mattress types that provide adjustable firmness.
Airbeds
Airbeds often provide adjustable firmness by adding or removing air at the touch of a button. They also offer separate air chambers which can allow each side of the bed to have its own firmness setting independent of the other. Airbeds with separate air chambers are popular with couples.
Waterbeds
Waterbeds can be adjusted in regard to firmness by adding or
removing water. This, of course, takes considerable time and effort to do and is
not nearly as simple and easy as adjusting firmness on an air
bed. Some waterbeds have multiple water chambers that can conceivably allow separate firmness setting for each side of the bed.
