Learn a Foreign Language and Sleep Deeper?

Learning a new language, especially as an adult, is likely the most challenging thing you can do mentally.

Your brain must work to create countless new connections. It must call on many areas and skills including memory, retrieval, auditory, language, and processing speed.

All of this activity will beneficially stress and tire your mind. As a result, you will likely sleep better because your mind will need the additional rest.

Learning a new language is especially engaging for your mind if the language is completely new to you. For example, an English speaker would be more challenged to learn Japanese or Mandarin Chinese than he would be to learn Spanish or French.

It is likely true that children under the age of 10 can learn a new language easier than adults can. However, this does not mean adults cannot become competent with a new language, it merely means that older learners probably won't be as fluent as people who learned early in life.

Learning a new language, of course, makes the most sense to do if you can use the language often. If you live in the United States, for example, you will likely have increasing opportunities to use Spanish. And more and more employers value people with English and Spanish language skills.

If you suffer from insomnia, your mind may not be challenged enough. If you apply yourself and learn a foreign language, you'll have all the mental challenge you can handle.
