The Serta iComfort Memory Foam Mattress Review You Can Actually Trust

No commission • No endorsements • Based on owner experiences • Since 2008 • More

THE GOOD: Several models and firmness levels to suit personal preference • above average edge support for a foam-based mattress • wide availability in stores • 120-day trial.

THE BAD: Potential for poor longevity, at least some heat retention, and questionable support.

THE MATTRESS: Serta iComfort (not to be confused with iComfort Hybrid) is made in USA and is priced $550-$3,900. It consists of a 6-7 inch foam base beneath (gel) memory foam and support foam.

THE COMPETITION: Tempur-Pedic and Sealy Memory Foam and other mid- to high-priced beds. See how iComfort compares in the memory foam mattress reviews – summary and the side-by-side mattress comparison. Also see how Serta and traditional mattress brands in general compare to newer brands.

Serta iComfort Memory Foam Mattress Ratings

The ratings – based on 540+ consumer reviews gathered using an unbiased, accurate methodology – show how Serta iComfort compares to the average mattress.

Owner satisfaction C iComfort overall has 74% owner satisfaction. More.
Affordable C- Prices are $650-$3,900, not including a foundation. The average queen iComfort costs about $1,850. More.
Durability / longevity D+ 20%+ of owners report a loss of support and or the development of significant body impressions ("peaks and valleys") occurring within three years of ownership. Learn more.
Support c iComfort's base / support layer likely lacks the thickness and or density preferred by those seeking a highly supportive mattress.
Less (back) pain C Sagging of the bed especially can cause at least some discomfort and back pain, report about 18% of owners. (See mattresses and pain relief for general analysis.)
Minimizes pressure B For average- to large-sized people especially, iComfort tends to at least moderately conform and mold to one's body resulting in well distributed support and pressure-point relief.
Easy to move on / get up off C- iComfort's conforming ability can provide some resistance to movement, including changing positions and getting up off the bed. As a result, the bed is not ideally suited for the weak, sick, disabled, or elderly.
Motion isolation A- Motion isolation tends to be a strength of memory foam in general. A bed with good motion isolation is couple friendly in that it isolates movement made by one person so the other person is not disturbed.
Edge support b- Unlike many foam mattresses, iComfort provides support to keep a person from rolling off the bed when close to the edge. About 7% of owners, however, report deteriorating edge support.
No initial odor / off gassing C- Off gassing is the release of a chemical-like odor that can occur when a mattress is new. About 9% of iComfort owners complain of a moderate-to-strong initial odor. More.
No sleeping hot D+ At least 10% of owners, especially those who live in warmer climates, report iComfort acting as a heat trap. More.
Sex friendly C- iComfort provides little or no bounce which is often considered a negative. Most iComfort models are heavy enough to stay in place. (See mattresses and sex for general analysis).
No noise A- The mattress itself is silent under all conditions (but the foundation may in some instances make noise).
No topper needed B- About 7% of owners need to add a topper to the mattress to improve softness and comfort.
Short break in C- Like many foam mattresses, break-in time tends to be slightly longer than that of the average mattress especially for firm models.
Easy to maintain C iComfort, like most memory foam beds, is a one-sided design. Serta suggests rotating the mattress (head to foot) every few months for year one and then twice annually after that.
Easy to lift, handle, move C- Average weight of a queen iComfort is about 95 lbs. The thicker and more expensive iComfort models may be difficult to move, transport and maneuver especially for one person.
Convenient try-out A- iComfort tends to be widely available in stores – as opposed to only online – which allows shoppers to briefly try the mattress before buying.

Serta iComfort Key Comparisons

Longevity / Durability

20%+ of owners report a loss of support and or the development of significant body impressions ("peaks and valleys") occurring within three years of ownership. This rate is higher than the rate for both the average mattress and the average memory foam mattress.

Serta has recently to a large extent revamped its model lineup; it is unclear at this time if the new models will perform better than the outgoing models in regard to longevity / durability.

Price

Serta iComfort on average is significantly more expensive than both the average mattress and those mattresses with generally similar specifications.

Initial Odor / Off Gassing

Off gassing is a chemical-like odor that a mattress may release when new. Serta iComfort off gasses somewhat less often and less strongly than the average memory foam mattress. See memory foam off gassing for general analysis.

icomfort off gassing comparison chart

Sleeping Hot / Heat Retention

A mattress that "sleeps hot" acts as a heat trap thereby undermining sleep quality. While the iComfort sleeps hot about as often as the average mattress, it sleeps hot less often than the average memory foam mattress.

Softer iComfort models are more likely to sleep hot than firmer ones due chiefly to the fact that the sleeper often lies lower in the mattress where there is less airflow. (See memory foam heat retention for general analysis.)
